Confirmed HPAI Detections
This dashboard offers a real-time snapshot of confirmed Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) detections across the United States. In addition to historical summary data since the outbreak began, the most relevant insights come from cases confirmed within the past 30 days, providing a clear view of the current impact on U.S. poultry populations.
At Eggs Unlimited, we closely monitor HPAI trends to ensure continuity of supply and support for our partners in the egg industry. Fluctuations in case numbers, driven largely by seasonal wild bird migrations, can affect regional production and logistics and lead to egg shortage. Our nationwide network and global sourcing capabilities help mitigate disruptions, allowing us to maintain reliable service even as local outbreaks emerge.
As conditions evolve, we remain committed to providing updated information, proactive planning, and transparent communication with our customers.
Avian Influenza summary
The H5N1 bird flu outbreak has significant implications for the egg supply chain in 2025. The outbreak has disrupted the egg supply chain, leading to higher prices and limited availability of eggs. Consumers may face challenges in accessing eggs, particularly during holiday seasons when demand is high.
Implementing strict biosecurity measures and maintaining strategic partnerships can help to mitigate the impact of the outbreak. The USDA and other agencies are involved in monitoring and controlling the spread of HPAI, providing guidance and support to egg producers.
As the world grapples with the consequences of the H5N1 bird flu outbreak, it’s essential to understand the causes, consequences, and future of the egg industry amidst this outbreak. By working together, we can minimize the impact of the outbreak and ensure a stable supply of eggs for consumers.
FAQs
Will egg prices continue to rise in 2025?
The USDA forecasts a rise in egg prices for 2025 due to the continually recurring HPAI outbreaks. The egg sector remains prone to shocks, with strain from elements like bird flu, elevated feed costs, and increasing labor and transportation challenges or new regulations causing supply instability and expensive eggs.
What is the dominant HPAI strain?
The dominant leading HPAI strain responsible for outbreaks globally and in U.S. domestic poultry and dairy cattle is H5N1.
How long will the H5N1 outbreak last?
It is difficult to predict the exact timeline of the H5N1 outbreak. The virus has circulated in North America since 2022, infecting a wide range of animal species. According to specialists, sustained high levels of activity have lasted for over a year, and that means the virus will not be vanishing soon.
What happens to infected flocks of farms?
When a farm has been confirmed to be with an HPAI-infected flock, the initial response is depopulation (culling) of both infected and exposed birds. The action is significant to prevent transmission of the highly contagious as well as deadly disease. The USDA strives to depopulate within 24 hours from detection. After depopulation, the farm is sanitized thoroughly and disinfected. Farmers are also encouraged to report suspected infections in due time.
How soon can a farm restock after an outbreak?
After an HPAI breakout, a farm cannot restock immediately. The plant must be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized and then left idle for at least a period of fallow, typically a period of no less than 14 to 28 days. The USDA will also take and test environmental swabs during this time to determine that the virus is eradicated. The farm will also have to meet any additional requirements that are placed by state or federal regulatory bodies, which can include the institution of specific biosecurity protocols. The farm will need to get written authorization from the USDA and state authorities before re-stocking, and new birds brought onto the property will need to be HPAI-free.
